How we serve serious food issues in a fun way!

Posted 7 months, 2 weeks ago in Blog

It's only one more month till World Disco Soup Day. The party where you fight food waste the fun way. But can you really make a change, by cooking and dancing together?

We believe so! And we will explain to you why, with 4 pressing questions to Jorrit, executive director of Slow Food Youth Network, the organization hosting this international event.

So Jorrit, what do young people get from this event?

Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) tries to serve food issues in an attractive way. My generation often thinks about the challenges we are facing as massive problems we can not solve, food waste is one of them. Events like Disco Soups gather a lot of young people and show them that being the change you want to see is way easier than you would expect. It is actually fun to do something about it!

What are the reactions from the participants?

When you are at a Disco Soup, you notice a lot of different people working together. The thing about food is that it really binds people together. We are not used to getting in touch with people anymore. We are living in our own (digital) world all the time, but during these events, people really grow together and have a great time. Next to that, and more related to food waste itself, is the fact that a lot of people do not know how to handle veggies with a weird spot and just throw it away. We show that you can make delicious meals from products you normally tend to throw away.

Why do you think Disco Soup has become so popular?

People within SFYN want to change the world by having fun. The thing about a Disco Soup is that people are working on a relevant issue (chopping veggies) while dancing to music and having fun. It is a very simple concept where everybody is able to join and have a good time, Also it is possible to organize it all over the world.

Where do you see it going in the future?

This is the second time we are organizing this worldwide event. Last year at our first events we had over a 100 events in more than 40 countries, we served approximately 25.000 meals. All organized with no budget and only by volunteers. It will only grow bigger and reach more people over the course of time.  Everybody can join us!

P.S. Yes, we are working on a new website, but first we got more important stuff to do, like saving food from the bins!
